About the event

The SGA Summer Workshop Series: Rooted in Memory highlights the value of Archives and Preservation in Black communities.  This 5-month series highlights the importance of preservation from knowledge production at the level of the body to institutional repositories.  These workshops center work of HBCU archives, archivists, and Black Memory Work(ers) and will take place during the Summer and Fall quarters of this year and will be open to the public.

Workshop: How Do You Remember? A Legacy Managment Workshop

Description: This workshop will use group discussion with instructive presentations to foster learning and knowledge-production from both the participants and the facilitator. Participants will discuss the importance of memory in their lives and what it means to manage legacies, especially while honoring themselves and others. The facilitator will present on memory work practices outside of institutional archive, followed by traditional archiving methods with particular considerations for personal and community archiving. The program will conclude with a Q&A session to address any other concerns that participants have.

Jehoiada Zechariah Calvin is a memory worker, writer, and zine-maker born, raised, and based in Chicago. Jehoiada is the Archives Assistant for the Johnson Publishing Company Archive, helping to process the historic photograph collection for Ebony, Jet, and several other magazines and JPC programs. Before joining JPC, Jehoiada created legacy management resources as the Community Engagement Archivist for the Black Metropolis Research Consortium. Jehoiada is a scholar in the University of Alabama’s Social Justice for Archivists Master of Library and Information Studies program. Jehoiada’s personal memory work uses historical research along with religious practices to self-publish zines and poetic collections reflective of his spirituality and personal experiences.
